Now, a renowned Harvard astrophysicist, Avi Loeb, is raising eyebrows with a bold claim: the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, currently hurtling towards our Sun, could potentially be a piece of advanced alien technology.
Loeb, director of Harvard’s Institute for Theory and Computation and known for his unconventional theories about extraterrestrial life, has been closely studying the trajectory of 3I/ATLAS. This object, first discovered in 2023, is an interstellar comet – meaning it originated from outside our solar system. What's particularly intriguing to Loeb is its unusual orbit and composition.
A Coincidental Alignment?
“The orbit of 3I/ATLAS coincides with the plane of the Earth by only 5 degrees – a remarkably small margin,” Loeb explained. “The probability of such a coincidence occurring randomly is only 0.2%.” This low probability has led him to question whether the object's path is purely natural or if it has been deliberately guided.
Loeb’s hypothesis centers around the possibility that 3I/ATLAS isn't a naturally formed object like a comet or asteroid. Instead, he suggests it could be a derelict spacecraft, perhaps a probe or a remnant of an ancient alien civilization. He bases this on the object’s unusual brightness, which doesn't quite align with expectations for a typical comet of its size. A metallic composition, he argues, could explain the unusual reflectivity.
Why Metallic?
“Comets are typically composed of ice and dust,” Loeb elaborated. “But the observed brightness of 3I/ATLAS suggests a higher reflectivity, which could be indicative of a metallic surface. A thin sheet of metal, for instance, could reflect more sunlight than a rocky or icy body.”
He further argues that a spacecraft, even one that has been traveling for millennia, could still maintain a recognizable structure. The harsh conditions of interstellar space might degrade some components, but a core structure could remain intact.
The Sunward Journey – A Purposeful Path?
The object's trajectory is taking it directly towards the Sun, a journey that will ultimately result in its disintegration. While this might seem like a destructive end, Loeb suggests it could be part of a deliberate design. “Perhaps it’s designed to enter the Sun to gather information about its composition or activity,” he posits.
