Star Wars Stuntman Avoids Jail After Benefits Fraud

A former Star Wars stuntman has avoided a prison sentence after admitting to fraudulently claiming £30,000 in benefits while allegedly spending £400,000 on a luxury lifestyle. Gerry Sherard, 65, appeared in the 1983 film *Return of the Jedi* as a stormtrooper and subsequently worked on numerous other productions.

Sherard, of Stockton-on-Tees, pleaded guilty to failing to declare over £30,000 in bank accounts and savings to Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council between 2018 and 2023. Teesside Crown Court heard that he received Universal Credit and Pension Credit during this period.

Prosecutors detailed a lifestyle seemingly at odds with his benefit claims. Evidence presented to the court indicated substantial expenditures, including stays at The Ritz in London and private jet travel, amounting to approximately £400,000. The court acknowledged that the prosecution's figures regarding the spending were estimates, based on bank statements.

Defence counsel argued that Sherard, who has health issues, had experienced a decline in his financial circumstances following a career in the film industry. They stated that he was struggling to manage his affairs and had not fully appreciated the need to declare his assets.

Judge Neil Kitching sentenced Sherard to a 12-month community order, including 200 hours of unpaid work. He also ordered him to pay £500 in court costs and a victim surcharge. The judge commented that while the scale of the deception was significant, Sherard’s age, health, and previous good character warranted a non-custodial sentence.

The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding benefit fraud and the importance of accurate declarations to local authorities. Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council has confirmed it will seek to recover the fraudulently claimed benefits.
