NT Health chief slams Casuarina Plaza mould infestation as 'unacceptable'
The head of NT Health has labelled a prolonged mould infestation at a Darwin medical facility unacceptable after parts of the building closed.
Casuarina Plaza, which houses a community health clinic, has been forced to restrict access to two floors due to widespread mould growth. The infestation has persisted for several years, impacting the operational capacity of the health services located within the complex.
Impact on Health Services
The presence of mould has necessitated the closure of specific areas to ensure the safety of staff and patients. While the clinic continues to provide services, the structural issues within the building have created significant logistical challenges for NT Health management.
The scale of the issue involves two separate floors of the building, where the infestation has been identified as a long-term problem. Officials have acknowledged that the duration of the issue is a matter of serious concern.
Official Response
The chief executive of NT Health expressed strong disapproval regarding the current state of the facility. During a briefing, the executive described the situation as:
'Unacceptable'
The department is currently reviewing the circumstances that allowed the mould to persist for such an extended period. Management is looking into the underlying causes, including potential building maintenance failures and environmental factors within the Darwin premises.
Ongoing Safety Measures
To mitigate risks to public health, the following measures have been implemented:
- Physical cordoning of affected floors and specific zones within the clinic.
- Restricted movement for non-essential personnel in the contaminated areas.
- Continuous monitoring of air quality and environmental conditions in adjacent spaces.
Patients attending the clinic are advised to follow any specific guidance provided by onsite staff regarding which entrances or service windows are currently operational. NT Health has not yet provided a definitive timeline for when the remediation work will be completed or when full access to the facility will be restored.
