Barnsley Families Love Beat the Street: Active Game a Summer Success!
Barnsley is buzzing with activity thanks to the hugely popular Beat the Street game! After a fantastic third summer, the challenge to get locals moving and exploring their neighbourhoods has crowned its winners. Running from June 12th to July 23rd, the game saw families, individuals, and teams pounding the pavements in a fun, competitive quest for points.
What is Beat the Street?
Beat the Street is a free, innovative game that transforms everyday walks into exciting adventures. Players use a free card or app to scan 'Beat Boxes' – small sensors located on lampposts, traffic lights, and other publicly accessible points throughout Barnsley. Each scan earns points, with bonus points awarded for chaining scans together. The more you move, the more points you score, and the higher you climb the leaderboard!
A Summer of Activity and Exploration
This year’s summer edition proved to be the most successful yet, with a significant increase in participation compared to previous years. Families particularly embraced the challenge, using the game as a fantastic way to spend quality time together while exploring hidden gems within Barnsley. Parents reported that Beat the Street encouraged their children to walk more and less time spent on screens, fostering a healthier lifestyle and a greater appreciation for their local environment.
“It’s been wonderful to see so many people out and about, discovering new routes and supporting local businesses,” said a spokesperson for the Barnsley Council. “Beat the Street isn’t just about fitness; it’s about community, exploration, and having fun. We're thrilled with the positive response and the impact it’s had on Barnsley.”
Winning Teams and Individual Achievements
The competition was fierce, with teams and individuals battling it out for the top spots on the leaderboard. The winning teams received prizes, celebrating their dedication and commitment to being active. Individual achievements were also recognised, highlighting the inspiring efforts of those who embraced the challenge and pushed themselves to move more.
Looking Ahead: Will Beat the Street Return?
The overwhelming success of this summer’s game has sparked discussions about bringing Beat the Street back to Barnsley in the future. Barnsley Council is actively exploring options to continue providing opportunities for residents to get active and explore their local area. Keep an eye on the council's website and social media channels for updates on future initiatives.
